What is the NCAA dead period?

The dead period is the strictest stretch of recruiting: no in-person contact at all. But it does not mean recruiting stops. Here is exactly what is off-limits, what still works, and how to use the time.

The dead period, defined

The dead period is the most restrictive period on the recruiting calendar. During a dead period, a college coach cannot have any in-person contact with you or your family, on or off campus. Coaches cannot watch you compete and cannot host you on a campus visit. It is the one period where no face-to-face recruiting happens.

Don't believe the myth

A dead period does not stop communication. Coaches can still call, email, text, and message you, and you can always reach out to them. Only in-person contact is paused.

What's still allowed

  • Coaches can call, email, text, and message you
  • You can initiate contact with coaches anytime
  • You can keep researching schools and programs
  • You can train, compete, and build your film

What coaches CANNOT do

  • Have any in-person contact, on or off campus
  • Watch you compete at games or events
  • Visit your high school or home
  • Host official or unofficial campus visits
Scout Tip

Treat a dead period as prep time. Sharpen your skills, push your grades, refresh your film, and keep the conversations going by phone and email so you are first in line when in-person recruiting reopens. Get evaluated and stay ready →

Dead period FAQ

What is the NCAA dead period?
The dead period is the most restrictive phase of the NCAA recruiting calendar. During a dead period, a college coach cannot have any in-person contact with a recruit or their family, on or off campus, and cannot watch the athlete compete or host campus visits. It is the only period where no face-to-face recruiting is allowed at all.
Can coaches call or text during a dead period?
Yes. A common misconception is that all communication stops during a dead period. It does not. Coaches can still call, email, text, and message recruits during a dead period. What is prohibited is in-person contact, meetings, evaluations at events, and campus visits. The phones and inboxes stay open.
What is the difference between a dead period and a quiet period?
During a quiet period, coaches can still have in-person contact with you on their own campus, so campus visits are allowed. During a dead period, no in-person contact is permitted anywhere, including campus visits. Both still allow calls and messages. Quiet means campus-only in person; dead means no in-person contact at all.
What should I do during a dead period?
Use the dead period to get ahead off the field: keep initiating contact with coaches by phone and email (you always can), update your highlight film, research and expand your list of target schools, push your grades and test scores, and keep training. Athletes who use dead periods well come back stronger when in-person recruiting resumes.
