How to get your NAIA ID number

If you want to compete at an NAIA college, your NAIA ID number is the key. Here is how to register on PlayNAIA, what it costs, what documents you need, and the current academic requirements.

What is the NAIA, and the NAIA ID number?

The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) oversees athletics at hundreds of smaller colleges across the U.S. and Canada, a strong alternative path to playing and earning scholarships in college. To compete, you register with the NAIA Eligibility Center at PlayNAIA.org and receive an NAIA ID number (also called your ECID, or Eligibility Center ID).

This number confirms your eligibility and is what you give NAIA coaches so they can add you to their recruiting short list. Important: the NAIA is separate from the NCAA, with its own eligibility center, ID, and rules. Registering with one does not register you with the other.

Scout Tip

First-time college students are not required to be on a school's short list to gain eligibility, but being added speeds up your review. Share your NAIA ID with coaches early. Get evaluated and get on coaches' radar →

NAIA academic eligibility requirements

As an entering freshman, you can qualify in one of two ways. The NAIA looks at your overall GPA and class rank, not individual core courses the way the NCAA does.

Option 1: the simple path

  • Earn a final high school GPA of 2.3 or higher (on a 4.0 scale)
  • That alone qualifies you, no test score or class rank needed

Option 2: two of three

  • A 2.0+ GPA on a 4.0 scale
  • Graduate in the top 50% of your class
  • An ACT of 18 or SAT of 970

Meet any two of the three benchmarks in Option 2 to qualify. Requirements can change, so always confirm the current standard on PlayNAIA.org.

NAIA ID number FAQ

What is an NAIA ID number?
An NAIA ID number (also called your ECID, or Eligibility Center ID) is a unique identifier assigned when you register with the NAIA Eligibility Center at PlayNAIA.org. It confirms your eligibility to compete at an NAIA college and is the number you share with NAIA coaches so they can add you to their recruiting short list. It is separate from the NCAA ID; the NAIA is a different association with its own process.
How do I get my NAIA ID number?
Go to PlayNAIA.org and click Register Student to create your profile and receive your NAIA ID. Then submit your required documents (official high school transcripts sent by your school, and ACT or SAT scores if you are using them, via code 9876), and ask NAIA coaches to add you to their short list to speed up your eligibility review.
What are the NAIA academic eligibility requirements?
An entering freshman qualifies in one of two ways: earn a final high school GPA of 2.3 or higher on its own, or meet two of these three benchmarks: a 2.0 GPA, a top-50% class rank, or a minimum test score of 18 on the ACT or 970 on the SAT. The NAIA looks at your overall GPA and class rank rather than individual core courses the way the NCAA does.
How much does NAIA registration cost?
NAIA Eligibility Center registration fees are $110 for students graduating from high school, $145 for a freshman with a break in enrollment, $160 for current college or transfer students, and $170 for international athletes. A fee waiver system is available for U.S. students with demonstrated financial need; ask your high school counselor. Fees are generally nonrefundable.
Is the NAIA different from the NCAA?
Yes. The NAIA and NCAA are separate associations with separate eligibility centers, ID numbers, and rules. Registering with one does not register you with the other. Many athletes register with both while they explore options, since NAIA schools offer another strong path to play and earn scholarships at the college level.
